Frequently Asked Questions
What do neurotoxin injections do?
Neurotoxin injections are a cosmetic procedure that uses the botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals that make muscles contract and move. It allows the skin and muscles in the affected area to relax, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They aren’t called wrinkle relaxers for nothing!
Besides dealing with wrinkles, neurotoxin injections have also been used to treat tense and overactive muscles. People use these treatments for temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), chronic migraines, muscle spasms, and neck pain.

What is a Botox Injection?
Botox is a brand of neurotoxin treatment by Allergan. The injectable medication is used to relax muscle activity. Its most common use is to reduce the appearance and resurgence of wrinkles. By controlling the muscles that contract when making facial expressions like frowning and squinting, you won’t get the same deep set lines. The common areas for treatment include the creases in the glabellar region, the corners of the eyes, and the forehead.
What is a Xeomin Injection?
Xeomin is a brand of neurotoxin treatment by Merz. Like Botox, the medication is a treatment derived from botulinum toxin and is injected into muscles to decrease activity. The unique thing about it is that it doesn’t include any additional proteins. Perfect for those who are allergic to the protein casings found in other competitors.
Its most common use is to improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It’s typically used in the glabellar region, the corners of the eyes, and the forehead.
What is the best neurotoxin treatment for you?
Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Daxxify are all made from the same neurotoxin, botulinum toxin, but each one comes with different formulations so their effects vary. You have to consider the area you want to treat, your desired end goal, and your budget. And like all things, you have to consider how you will react to the treatment.
Here’s a quick brief about the different types of cosmetic neurotoxin injections:
- Botox – Since it’s the first of its kind, Botox is a well-known cosmetic treatment and remains to be a client favorite. With Botox injections, you gradually get the full wrinkle-free effect. There will be minor signs of improvement after 2 to 4 days. For full results, wait until 10 to 14 days. A Botox treatment will last you anywhere from 3 to 6 months before the effects wear off and you need to top-up.
- Xeomin – Xeomin has been a popular alternative for those who are tired of the same injectables. Its single-ingredient formula is perfect for those who have developed a tolerance to Botox or who suffer allergic reactions from their protein casings. It is on the slow side when it comes to results. It could take up to 4 days until you see results and it fully sets 2 weeks later. A Xeomin injectable will last you anywhere from 3 to 4 months.
Our medical professionals can help you get a better idea about what’s the best neurotoxin injection for you. They will walk you through the pros and cons of each product and recommend one that suits your needs and lifestyle.
How long do neurotoxin injections last?
Generally speaking, your neurotoxin injection should last you 3 to 6 months. A lot of factors come into play when it comes to the longevity of the treatment. You have to consider the type of neurotoxin injection and how your body processes it. A treatment that lasts for 4 months for one person, could mean 2 months for another.

Will my wrinkles come back stronger after a Botox/ Xeomin injection?
No. When the Botox or Xeomin treatment wears off, your wrinkles will not come back stronger. Any visible fine lines you see are likely wrinkles you had in the past. If you don’t continue to pursue treatment, then your wrinkles will progress in natural order.
Does the Botox/ Xeomin injection hurt?
Pain tolerance varies from person to person. But generally speaking, most people find the injection to cause mild, temporary discomfort.

Botox-aftercare–what do you do?
After you receive a neurotoxin injectable, here are some aftercare instructions so you can reduce bruising and get the best results:
- No lying down – During the first 4 hours, you want to avoid activities that might spread the toxin outside the treated area. So while you should kick back and relax, make sure you do it in an upright position.
- Avoid touching the injection sites – For the first 4 hours keep your hands off the treated area.
- No exercise – Try to maintain a steady heart rate, increase in blood pressure may lead to bruising. Avoid exercise and other strenuous activities for at least 3 to 4 hours after your treatment.
- Don’t get additional treatments – For 24 hours after your neurotoxin injection, avoid things like facials, massages, and similar anti-aging treatments. They may reduce the effectiveness of your injectable.
- Avoid heat – When you are fresh from your treatment avoid activities that make you warmer than usual. The heat may promote bruising. That means no sun, saunas, hot tubs, baths, tanning beds, and hot yoga for at least 48 hours.
- Avoid alcohol – Like heat, alcohol increases the risk of bruising. Avoid consuming it before and after your treatment.
- Watch your medication – Neurotoxins don’t always play nicely with other medications. If you have regular maintenance meds, consult your doctor first about whether it’s safe to consume with your neurotoxin treatment.
